Wilayat of Sinaw

Wilayat of Sinaw

The new governorates system raised the administrative status of the Niyabat of Sinaw to that of a Wilayat. Its population exceeds 19,000. The Wilayat of Sinaw in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate abounds with ancient historical landmarks. Harat Al Souq Al Qadimah (the Old Souq Quarter) is one of the historical sites in Sinaw; it takes its name from its long-established souq at the centre of the quarter, which contains a number of old shops. The Sinaw Treasure was found inside a pottery jar in Shawwal 1399 AH/September 1979 AD in the Wilayat of Sinaw, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. The glazed jar is turquoise blue with handles on both sides, and it contained (962) silver dirhams dating from the Sasanian and early Islamic periods. The conservation team at the National Museum restored the Sinaw Treasure, the largest coin hoard found in the Sultanate to date, as part of the Museum's efforts to showcase the treasures of Omani cultural heritage, from the earliest traces of human presence to the present day. The Thursday Souq is held in Sinaw every Thursday and is very busy owing to its proximity to Bedouin communities, who come to buy their supplies and sell their livestock and hand-woven textiles. The souq opens at six in the morning and runs until one in the afternoon. The Craftsmen's Souq also offers a variety of traditional crafts and handicrafts, such as textiles, silver jewellery, spinning and other handmade products made at home. Sinaw Souq is one of the most active commercial markets among the governorates and Wilayats of the Sultanate. Holding the Craftsmen's Souq every Saturday adds a great deal to the practice and marketing of traditional crafts and answers the craftsmen's requests for marketing outlets to support their products. The souq will also encourage craftsmen to be creative in their crafts and to display their products. The Craftsmen's Souq in Sinaw attracts large numbers of visitors, as the Wilayat has an active commercial market, whether in Al Kubrah Souq, the fish and vegetable souq or the Thursday Souq. There is also a strong presence of vendors from neighbouring Wilayats displaying their products at the Thursday Souq, and most people in the Wilayats know that the Craftsmen's Souq in Sinaw succeeds on the strength of the Thursday Souq.
